Q: What is m@k→ or --m@k-->?
A: It's my signature. Inspired by an insignia painted on my grandfather's duffle bag, ASCII art, my former love of RIP graphics and conversations in Carol Strohecker's Everyday Learning Group at Media Lab Europe, I arrived at a new digital and physical signature, mapping common symbols to corresponding phonemes in my name. The result: --m@k-->
Explained: m + @ = Matt k + → = Karau (My immediate family, the Indiana and Michigan Karaus, pronounce it kɑːrjuː, as in Rod Carew. Though, the Wisconsin and Minnesota Karaus pronounce it kærːoʊː. I derived my signature from the older Wisconsin/Minnesota pronounciation. The original European pronounciation is likely kɑːraʊː.) Related Story: By chance viral dissemination, a number of MLE staff came to have a very similar email signature. Fueled by HTML-formatted-email malaise, I created an adaptable letterhead/business-card-like signature, using the geometry of the Courier font to shape the layout. The result is an email signature that allows for varied data fields while retaining a simple, professional feel.
